Diet vs Nutrition

The words diet and nutrition get thrown around a lot, and diet especially is often seen with a negative connotation. It is vital as consumers and resilient human beings to understand the differences between diet and nutrition.

The idea of a diet in modern culture tends to focus on the food that an individual is restricting or eliminating in their daily life. However, an individual’s diet is simply the sum of the food that he/she habitually eats. A diet is more than “being on a diet,” so consider viewing diet as a noun rather than a verb. A diet should focus on improving health, enhancing vitality, and increasing energy.

Nutrition is the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth. Nutrition focuses on the quality of the food itself. For instance, nutrition exemplifies what our bodies needs to consume daily to function properly, such as carbohydrates, protein, fats, fiber, water, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. One’s nutrition is critical at all stages in life.

Once we understand the foundation of nutrition and diet, we can then focus more on tangible decisions to make towards our health-related goals. It is important to have a clear understanding of diet and nutrition in order to make decisions that reflect improving our health and enhancing our vitality.
